The Port Burwell Historical Society is looking for people who want to retain the cultural and historically significance of Port Burwell, honour our ties to the Great Lakes shipping and learn from our history to prepare for our future.
The Society meets once a month between September and June, on the second Tuesday of the month. Annual membership dues are $20.00
Our beloved Port Burwell Lighthouse is in danger of collapsing in on itself. The Municipality refuses to allocate any municipal funding for its preservation and conservation. We need a strong and united community fundraising program to drive the restoration of this historic structure. The Port Burwell Historical Society volunteers are leading the charge to save our Lighthouse. Please join the fight to rescue this icon of Bayham from demolition by neglect.
Once again the Port Burwell Historical Society will be organizing and presenting the Village's Canada Day Festivities on July 1st, 2026. We need volunteers to help set up venues, organize the Parade, hand out give aways and help with the distribution of refreshments. Please come out on July 1st and help make a difference.
The Port Burwell Historical Society volunteers are resurrecting the restoration project to convert the current wheelhouse shell into an integral part of the Museum.
We are in need of some skilled craftsmen in the electrical, HVAC, insultation and carpentry fields to assist us in our restoration. As well, we need a general labour force to help clean, paint, etc.
If you or your company can lend us a hand please let us know.
Our noble Mariner is showing the effects of battling the elements. In the fall of 2025 the Port Burwell Historical Society decided a restoration of our noteworthy carving was necessary to ensure he could continue his vigil in downtown Port Burwell for years to come.
The main sculpture is in relatively good shape. He has weathered over the years and it has given him a rugged patina. The sculptor, Peter Turrell, assures us this is not an issue and is very pleased with his current appearance. There are some cracks that have formed along the lines of the woodgrain that need to be addressed and we have documented the techniques and materials recommended by Peter.
Unfortunately, the wheel portion of the ensemble has suffered numerous issues and is beyond repair. This will need to be replaced. We are currently reviewing our options.
The Steinbrenner Lifeboat needs to be refurbished prior to becoming the focal point for a new indoor exhibit. Volunteers can assist with activities such as cleaning and preparation efforts, sanding, minor repairs, painting and moving the lifeboat into the Museum. Please consider donating your time and experience to the restoration of this important artifact. Become a Port Burwell Historical Society Volunteer,
